YouTube Thumbnail Size & Dimensions: The 2026 Cheat Sheet

Updated 7 June 2026 ยท 6 min read

Upload the wrong size and YouTube crops, blurs, or rejects your thumbnail. Here are the exact specs to get it pixel-perfect every time โ€” plus the mobile "safe zone" trick most creators miss.

The specs at a glance

SpecValue
Resolution1280 ร— 720 px (recommended)
Aspect ratio16:9
Minimum width640 px
File formatsJPG, PNG, GIF, WebP
Maximum file size2 MB

Stick to 1280ร—720 and you'll look crisp everywhere โ€” from the tiny sidebar suggestion to a full-screen TV.

Why 1280 ร— 720 (and 16:9)?

16:9 is the native shape of the YouTube player and every thumbnail slot. 1280ร—720 is the sweet spot: high enough resolution to look sharp on large screens, small enough to stay well under the 2MB limit. Going bigger (like 1920ร—1080) is fine too, as long as you keep the 16:9 ratio and the file under 2MB โ€” but it's rarely necessary.

Wrong ratio = ugly bars or crops. A square (1:1) or portrait image gets letterboxed or cropped, wasting space and making your thumbnail look amateur. Always export 16:9.

The mobile safe-zone trick

Here's the gotcha: the bottom-right corner of every thumbnail is covered by the video's duration stamp (e.g. "12:04"). If you put important text or a face there, it gets blocked.

Keep your key elements inside a safe zone:

File format: JPG or PNG?

ThumbLoop exports a clean 1280ร—720 PNG by default, so your headline text stays razor-sharp.
